About Our Founder

Dan Lipworth

Meet Dan, our Founder and Lead Tutor, with over 15 years of tutoring experience. His journey began in Grade 11, when he was inspired by his own math tutor. She showed him that it wasn't the subject matter that was difficult, but rather his teacher’s teaching method simply didn’t click with him. With some personal attention geared towards Dan’s learning style, Dan quickly began to excel in Grade 11, and by Grade 12 even began tutoring younger students. Since then, Dan has helped countless students in a wide range of subjects, from Math and Science to English writing and even the MS Office Suite (with a specialization in Excel).

Dan went on to become an engineer, so it’s fair to say that the math tutoring paid off. After spending years in manufacturing engineering, where he conducted countless one-on-one and group training sessions, Dan realized that his true passion lay in the teaching and tutoring he did in his evenings. In 2023, he made the bold decision to transform his passion into a full-time career. His aim is to not only empower students but also to find exceptional tutors who can make a genuine connection with their students. His goal is to not only improve academics, but to inspire the confidence that lies within every student, with which they can unlock a potential that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Our story

True North Tutors was built on the belief that every student can succeed when learning finally makes sense to them. What began as a single moment of clarity in a high-school math class grew into a lifelong passion for teaching, mentoring, and helping students unlock their confidence. Over the years, that passion evolved into a trusted tutoring practice grounded in patience, personalization, and real connection. Today, True North Tutors exists to guide students toward their own “true north” — not just better grades, but stronger skills, self-belief, and a foundation for lifelong learning.

2006

Origins

Dan’s high school math tutor changes his life. Through patience, kindness, and genuine skill, she shows him that success isn’t about innate academic ability—it’s about finding the right person to teach in a way that finally makes sense. His marks improve, but more importantly, so does his confidence. A seed is planted.

2007

First Lessons

Wanting to give back, Dan begins volunteering as a peer tutor for younger students. His earliest students quickly begin to excel, igniting a passion for teaching—and for building confidence—that continues to guide his work today.

2010s

Skill Development

Dan completes a Business Degree at Wilfrid Laurier University and a Biological Engineering Degree at the University of Guelph. Throughout both programs, he continues tutoring peers and eventually tutors high-school students professionally. During this time he also refines his corporate-training abilities, teaching advanced Excel skills to colleagues at companies such as PepsiCo and developing the teaching toolkit he still relies on today.

2023

Birth of True North Tutors

After several years as a Process Engineer, Dan launches True North Tutors as his full-time focus. He builds a network of exceptional tutors—some of them former students—and begins offering lessons at scale. The company expands to include corporate Excel training for individual professionals and teams across small- and medium-sized businesses in the Greater Toronto Area. True North Tutors becomes known for expert instruction grounded in empathy, clarity, and confidence-building.

2026 and Beyond — Continued Growth

Inception and vision

Dan continues to expand True North Tutors, offering expert lessons in math and science while steadily growing a team of highly trained tutors who share his belief that confidence is the foundation of learning. He broadens the company’s subject offerings and refines its academic programs, strengthening support for students from elementary through university. At the same time, he develops the corporate training side of the business, designing clearer, more accessible Excel and data-literacy programs for professionals across Ontario. With each year, True North Tutors becomes a more established educational partner for families and businesses alike, guided by the same mission that inspired Dan’s very first lessons: helping people understand more, struggle less, and feel confident in what they can achieve.
